Braving the Rapids with Boys Hope Girls Hope
Topic: Community
Last Saturday a goodly number of Cornerstoners, ranging from seven–year–olds to seniors citizens, went on a fun–filled, four–and–a–half mile float trip with some outstanding young students from Boys Hope Girls Hope.
Only two canoes went belly–up, by the way. And I had nothing to do with either one. Honest.
Don’t know what Boys Hope Girls Hope is? Here’s their mission statement:
“Boys Hope Girls Hope helps academically capable and motivated children–in–need to meet their full potential and become men and women for others by providing value–centered, family–like homes, opportunities, and education through college.”
One of our members, who volunteers at BHGH as a tutor, has described it this way…
“Children with unstable home lives that threaten their dreams and potential apply for admission to a BHGH residence. Among the many benefits that BHGH scholars receive beyond a stable, family–like home environment are admittance to college–preparatory, middle, and high schools, academic tutoring and support services, athletic and co–curricular opportunities, character and spiritual development, professional counseling, independent living skills development, and college planning and financial aid.”
It’s really a fantastic work! This is the third time Cornerstone has done something with the young people from BHGH, and I hope we‘ll have many more opportunities to enjoy and serve them in the future.
Every time I’m with them I’m more impressed with the incredible potential of these “children–in–need,” who have known the privilege of having other people invest something meaningful in their lives.
